The story begins when a young psychiatrist named Edward Newgate came to Stonehearst Asylum for studying more about the patient, he is welcomed by the manager Dr. Lamb who offered for staying there (a good opportunity that is expected by him).

Beside Dr. Lamb there was Mr. Finn a multitalented employee who does everything which is related to the order, Mrs. Graves (Kate Beckinsale) is the “it woman” who stays there because she wants it, Millie is the childish nurse, the rest is the guest who attending dinner, the nurse who kept the patient stay alive and the (il)legal employee who looks like a bandit.

One night Dr. Edward accidentally found a path which is lead him into underground jail, he was shocked when knew there are so many people there, especially when they admit themselves as the (unwanted) manager and the employee of Stonehearst Asylum. They’re gone jailed by Dr. Lamb, the patient itself.

They told him to escape to the nearest village for help and asked to get the jail key in Mr. Finn's hand. Mr. Salt (the real manager) told me about the case document of Dr. Lamb because it could be helpful for him.

Dr. Lamb is a military surgery doctor, he killed 5 people on duty. But, the method of Dr. Salt is more unexpected, he threatens the patient with his freakish experiment. It’s a kind of divergence process.

Looking at this bad situation Dr. Edward asks Ms. Graves to escape from Stonehearst Asylum to get a better future before the madness of Dr. Lamb gets worst. He was used by Dr. Salt for trying his new freakish experiment, electric shock therapy, and he is end up losing his mind.

In new Year's Night Dr. Lamb held a big (madness) party, all the patients came and enjoyed the night. But the night is over when Dr. Edward caught up trying to anesthetize their drink, and he is brought into the new electric shock therapy (again).

In the end, the real employee escaped success, they took the reins and brought back the patient into their cell. Dr. Edward and Ms. Graves took the chance for living together.

But wait ... it’s not the (real) end .. there is also a big surprise waiting in the end, the gift for those watching this.

I recommend this movie, really recommend it!!! interesting plot, remember this story written in 1900 era by Edgar Allan Poe. But, I always feel uncomfortable with Ben Kingsley, he always remain me about the failed Eragon movie.

Memang, ada istilah yang berbunyi “don’t judge the book by it’s cover” Ah, tapi bagi saya hal itu sudah terlanjur basi. Orang yang pertama kali mencetuskan istilah itu belum pernah menikmati cover buku yang menarik atau full illustration, sudah jelas, karena disaat itu belum ada profesi sebagai graphic designer dan illustrator yang serius menggarap cover buku.

Hal yang pertama kali menarik perhatian saya ketika akan membeli buku adalah covernya bukan isinya, cover design berada di depan sedangkan resensi berada di belakang menandakan bahwa “you can judge the book by it’s cover” karena seharusnya cover design merepresentasikan keseluruhan isi buku.

Makanya, saya seringkali merasa kesal kalau kecele membeli buku, cover designnya bagus tapi isinya ngehe, apalagi kalau sampai gak nyambung. Eh, tapi itu belum seberapa dengan rasa kesal ketika menemukan buku dengan cover design yang (bagi saya) ngasal, copy paste dari gambar-gambar yang sudah familiar di Google . Pada kemana graphic designernya?

Seringkali penerbit mencetak ulang buku dengan cover yang baru, bagi saya itu tidak menjadi masalah selama masih bisa merepresentasikan keseluruhan isi buku, jangan sampai cover design yang baru jadi boomerang bagi penerbit, syukur-syukur bisa menaikkan oplah.

Ketika sebuah buku diangkat ke layar lebar atau difilmkan. Apakah cover design buku tersebut perlu dirubah seperti movie posternya? Mmm ... kayaknya gak perlu deh, buku ya buku, film ya film, cover design merepresentasikan keseluruhan isi buku sedangkan movie poster merepresentasikan keseluruhan isi film. Buku merupakan hasil karya pemikiran penulis sedangkan filmnya adalah hasil representasi pembuat film mengenai buku tersebut, 2 hal dengan ekspetasi yang berbeda tidak bisa dipaksakan untuk sama. Jadinya rumpang.

Menurut saya buku dengan cover design yang (masih) orisinil jauh lebih menarik ketimbang dengan cover design edisi movie poster. Saya tidak menyatakan bahwa cover design yang edisi movie poster itu jelek, hanya saja (agak) mengganggu karena mengurangi esensi dari buku tersebut. Jangan lupa, seringkali film yang diadaptasi dari buku memiliki cerita yang sedikit (atau banyak) berbeda dengan versi bukunya.

Saya sendiri pun pernah mengunjungi beberapa toko buku (large and medium) untuk mencari buku dengan cover design yang orisinil dan ternyata tidak ketemu. Sebenarnya sih buku itu ada, tapi cover designnya yang baru membuat saya kesal. So, i have nothing.

Well ... Saya tidak ingin memaksakan diri untuk memiliki apa yang tidak ingin saya miliki.

Dilihat dari segi marketing tentu saja perubahan cover dengan edisi movie posters merupakan salah satu strategi promosi film. Tapi ya ... coba difikirkan lagi deh, jika ingin membeli buku yang sudah diadaptasi menjadi film, calon pembaca pun sudah tahu pasti judulnya tanpa harus dibantu dengan movie posters. Selain itu, kadangkala saya juga merasa terus menerus dibayangi visualisasi di film ketimbang membaca buku itu dan meresapi isinya.

Anyway,serepresentatif apapun cover design tetap saja tidak akan mampu merubah nasib sebuah buku, karena pada akhirnya isinyalah yang akan dinilai oleh pembaca.
